Travi$ Scott – “Owl Pharaoh” review

Travi$ Scott is a Houston rapper, singer, producer & songwriter who’s under the wing of both T.I. & Kanye West. He had the opening verse on the song “Sin City” off of GOOD Music’s Cruel Summer compilation several months prior (he even co-produced that song along with 2 other tracks), but now he’s finally coming through with his 1st mixtape after being selected as a part of the 2013 XXL Freshman Class. The first 2 tracks “Meadow Creek” & the second half of “Bad Mood / Shit On You” blatantly sound like something I’d hear on KiD CuDi’s first 2 albums & while they’re not bad at all, it simultaneously makes me wanna go listen to Man on the Moon: The End of Day. The 3rd track “Upper Echelon” with T.I. talks about getting high over a decent trap beat & the fact that 2 Chainz’ boring verse from the single version was removed from the mixtape version actually makes this song much more of an enjoyable listen. The “Chaz Interlude” by Toro y Moi is a short but sweet break & as for the next track “Uptown” with A$AP Ferg, the verses about cruising downtown aren’t bad & the production from WondaGurl is really murky but the fact that Travi$ rehashes the hook from “Monster” by Kanye for the hook on this song is a turn off for me. The track “Blocka La Flame” is his version of “Blocka” off of Pusha T’s Wrath of Caine mixtape (which he co-produced & did the hook on). It’s just ok. The song “Drive” has an ambitious beat, my biggest issue with this track is the fact that Travi$ does very little rapping throughout it’s 5’s minute runtime. The song “M.I.A” reuses the 2 verses he performed for his 2013 XXL Freshman freestyle over a spacey trap beat & these 2 verses sound a bit better over it, honestly. The closing track “Bandz” gets braggadocious about money & while the beat is hard hitting, I wasn’t feeling Meek Mill’s guest verse at all. As for Travi$’ verses, his first one’s pretty generic but his closing one definitely makes up for it. While I definitely see the potential that Travi$ Scott has, this is basically a trap version of KiD CuDi’s first 2 albums

Score: 3/5
