Megadeth – “Dystopia”

If any of you are like me & you thought that Super Collider (the 14th & previous album iconic thrash metal band Megadeth that came out just 3 years ago) was absolute garbage, then you probably were as extremely worried as I was going into their latest full-length album over here. However, this time I’m getting mixed feelings on it. For one, the guitar riffs & drumming from Kiko Loureiro of Angra & (oddly enough) Chris Adler of Lamb of God respectively are the band’s most energetic & abrasive in a VERY long time but the songwriting & vocals from the band’s frontman Dave Mustaine are still as stupid as they were last time on Super Collider. There are moments where both previously mentioned aspects are tolerable like with the title track or “Posionous Shadows” (both of which are vividly written) but then you have tracks like “Bullet to the Brain” which is corny as fuck, “The Emperor” which sounds like it was written by an angsty teenager or (notably) “Post American World” which sounds like it was written for a speech at a Donald Trump rally. His vocals even sound robotic on the track “Fatal Illusion” & while I can understand why he did that, his raspy voice didn’t mix in with it all that well in my personal opinion. Not only that, but as each year goes by I feel like Dave is sounding more & more like a tired chainsmoker. I honestly wasn’t sure how or if the band was gonna top Super Collider, but I walked away from this album finding it to be just decent. Hopefully, the instrumental performances on here are an indication that the band is heading into the right direction of making better music

Score: 2.5/5
