Lil Yachty – “Lil Boat” review

If you don’t already know by now, Lil Yachty is an 18 year old trap/cloud rapper hailing from Atlanta. He was featured as a part of the 2016 XXL Freshman Class & this right here is his breakout mixtape. And after listening to this thing several times, I’m not really seeing all the hype. I mean the production is there but the lyricism is subpar & the Auto-Tune delivery is horrendously unoriginal. Like on the opening track Intro (Just Keep Swimming), Never Switch Up or Interlude. However tracks like Not My Bro, Good Day, Run/Running (which features a very creatively incorporated Super Mario 64 sample), Fucked Over & the closing track We Did It (Positivity Song) actually do feature song topics that I find interesting but they’re still being executed as equally poor as the other tracks on here. There is some potential on here & I will admit that it is slightly better than what you’d hear from Future or Young Thug, but it’s namely the lyricism & the delivery that make this mixtape a really hard pill for me to swallow

Score: 1.5/5
