CZARFACE – Self-titled review

CZARFACE is an underground hip hop trio composed of Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck and Army of the Pharaohs/Demigodz subgroup 7L & Esoteric. While Deck has previously collaborated with 7L & Eso on the duo’s own tracks “Speaking Real Words” & “12th Chamber” in 1999 & 2010 respectively, this is the 1st time the 3 are uniting for a full-length project & it certainly doesn’t disappoint if you love the Wu or AotP (or both for that matter). The album starts off with the thunderous “Air ‘Em Out” & both MCs sound like they don’t give a fuck at all throughout which is just plain awesome. The track “Czar Refaeli” has an eerie beat & it starts off with a guest verse from Oh No of Gangrene, but Deck steals the show when he starts spitting after Oh No does because Deck’s technicality on this track is purely LETHAL! The track “Rock Beast” has a pretty triumphant beat & both MCs are bragging about how great they are. The track “Marvel Team-Up” has a grimy beat throughout & I really love the way Deck & Esoteric trade back & forth on this track hence the title. The track “Let It Off” is the only track on the album to noty be produced by 7L & it certainly doesn’t disappoint at all because Deck & Eso both sound fantastic over the sinister atmospheric production that is brought to the table by none other than DJ Premier. The track “World War 4” sees 7 going back to the boards & he gives us a headbobbing triumphant atmosphere in contrast to the previous track, although the track after “Dead Zone” goes into this ominous atmosphere. To me, this is a classic. 7L’s criminally underrated production is reminiscent to Premier’s, Deck proves he’s still one of the most underrated lyricists in the game as does Esoteric, the chemistry between all 3 members is as near perfect & reminiscent to Method Man & Redman’s & the whole comic book vibe is executed really well

Score: 4.5/5
