Method Man – “4:21… The Day After” review

It’s been only 2 years since Method Man of the almighty Wu-Tang Clan dropped his embarrassing 3rd solo effort Tical 0: The Prequel, but now he’s redeeming himself with his 4th full-length solo album as well as his final solo album under Def Jam Recordings. The intro starts off with protesters wanting Marijuana legalized, but then it goes into a beat from the Wu’s de facto leader RZA & it sounds like it was made in the Mid/Late-90’s but in an awesome way. Meth himself sounds at home over this beat too. The next track “Is It Me?” has a nice beat from former Roots keyboardist turned Dr. Dre protégé Scott Storch & Meth’s talking about the changing hip hop industry. The track “Dirty Mef” has some menacing piano chords throughout & it was really cool for him to put an unreleased verse from the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard on here. RZA even reused the beat from “Skrilla” off of Dirt’s unreleased 3rd solo album A Son Unique for the track “The Glide” (although RZA made some slight changes to it’s reuse). The track “Gotta Have It” has a soulful beat from Erick Sermon of EPMD & it’s basically about the shit Meth wants to buy. The track “Walk On” sees Meth reuniting with his partner in rhyme Redman as they trade bars back & forth over a solid rap rock-ish beat. A lot of people don’t mention this album when talking about Meth’s best solo albums & I think that’s a shame. This is a MAJOR improvement over his previous album as well as my 3rd favorite album of his

Score: 4/5
