Ghostface Killah – “bulletproof wallets” review

Almost 2 years since the release of his 2nd masterpiece Supreme Clientele, the Ghostface Killah of the almighty Wu-Tang Clan is returning with his 3rd full-length album. The album’s 1st song “Maxine” with fellow Wu member Raekwon is a vividly told story about an encounter at a drug dealer’s safe house & the horns that RZA heavily samples throughout the entire song gives the song a more serious soundscape. The final version of the next track “Flowers” with Rae as well as Method Man & Superb isn’t bad at all, but it’s such a damn shame the original version of the song didn’t make it onto the album due to sample clearances because the OG version of this track goes MUCH harder if you ask me. The song “Never Be the Same Again” is a love song & while it does sound commercial, it’s pretty smooth sonically. The song “Strawberry” with Killa Sin of Killarmy has a symphonic beat from Mathematics & as much as I enjoy Ghost’s verse about this broad, the opening verse from Killa Sin showcases the true potential that the dude really had. The next song “The Forest” has a bunch of creatively incorporated fairy tale/cartoon references throughout & the sample that The Alchemist uses on here is perfect! The song “Walking Through the Darkness” is Ghost’s version of the Tekitha song that appeared on the Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai soundtrack a couple years before & while RZA’s production still has the same funky ass Bobby Womack sample as the original Tekitha version does, I’d say Ghost sounds way better over that beat. As a full album, would I say that this is a 3rd consecutive masterpiece? Not at all. However, I will say that I feel like this is one of the most underrated albums that Ghost has ever made

Score: 3.5/5
